जगभरात कोरोना महामारीनं दहशत निर्माण केल्यावर आता लसीचं महत्त्व अधिक ठळकपणे दिसू लागलय.

पण हा लसीकरण दिवस ( VACCINATION DAY ) खरंतर १६ मार्च १९९५ पासून सुरू झाला.

२४ मार्च २०१४ रोजी जागतिक आरोग्य संघटनेच्या दक्षिण-पूर्व आशिया प्रदेशातील

बांगलादेश, भूतान, इंडोनेशिया, म्यानमार, रिपब्लिक ऑफ कोरिया, नेपाळ, श्रीलंका, आणि

थायलंड या अकरा देशांसह भारताला देखील पोलियो मुक्त देश म्हणून प्रमाणपत्र मिळाले.

भारतामध्ये पोलिओच्या रुग्णाची शेवटची घटना १३ जानेवारी २०११ रोजी नोंदवली गेली.

१९९० पर्यंत जगात पोलिओचा खूपच प्रसार झाला.

आणि त्याच्या साथींचा उद्रेक ही नेहमीची घटना होऊ लागली.

पोलिओमुळे हजारो मुलं आणि प्रौढ व्यक्ती अपंग झाल्या.

त्यानंतर यावर लस शोधण्यात आली आणि सर्वसामान्यांना दिलासा मिळाला.

पोलिओच्या लसी विकसित करण्याचं श्रेय जातं ते म्हणजे जोनस सॉल्क आणि अल्बर्ट सेबिन यांना.

जागतिक आरोग्य संघटना, युनिसेफ आणि रोटरी इंटरनॅशनल या संस्थांच्या पोलिओ निर्मूलनाच्या प्रकल्पामुळं

जगातून लवकरच पोलिओ संपेल अशी आशा निर्माण झाली आहे.

पोलिओच्या परिणामांचे ज्ञान आदिमानवाच्या काळापासून तयार झालंय असं सांगितलं जातं.

इजिप्शियन कलाकृतींमध्ये पोलिओचे अवशेष सापडतात.

मायकेल अंडरवुड यांनी १७८९ साली पोलिओचे पहिले वर्णन केले.

या आजाराला सुरुवातीला इनफॅनटाइल पॅरॅलिसिस ( INFANTILE PARALYSIS ) असं म्हटलं जायचं.

त्या काळात लोकांचे राहणीमान अतिशय खालावलेला होतं पण रोगप्रतिकारक शक्ती चांगली होती.

म्हणून सहा महिन्यांहून कमी वयाच्या मुलांना अगदी कमी वेळा हा आजार व्हायचा.

परंतु, विसाव्या शतका नंतर चांगल्या राहणीमानामुळं या आजाराची तीव्रता कमी होऊ लागली.

आपल्या भारतात परत ही पोलिओची लाट येऊ नये यासाठी प्रत्येक १ ते ५ वयोगटातील मुलांना पोलिओची लस दिली जाते.

पोलिओ नेमका कसा पसरतो? ( HOW POLIO SPREADS )

आधीच संसर्ग झालेल्या व्यक्तीशी संपर्क झाल्याने पोलिओ पसरतो.

क्वचित रुग्णाच्या विष्ठेने दूषित झालेले अन्न आणि रुग्णाच्या लाळेशी संबंध आल्याने पोलिओ होऊ शकतो.

थोडक्यात पोलिओ दूषित पाणी आणि अन्नामधून पसरतो.

जेवण्यापूर्वी जेवल्यानंतर, शौचानंतर हात घुतल्याने पोलिओ विषाणूचा प्रसार थांबतो.

जोपर्यंत विषाणू घाणीत आहे तोपावेतो विषाणू घशात किंवा शौचामध्ये जिवंत राहतो.
