नेताजी सुभाषचंद्र बोस यांचा जन्म २३ जानेवारी १८९७ रोजी ओडिसामधील कटक शहरात झाला. त्यांच्या वडिलांचे नाव जानकिनाथ तर आईचे नाव प्रभावती होते. वडिल पेशाने वकील होते. दोघांना एकूण १४ अपत्ये होती.

शिक्षण व विद्यार्थी जीवन:-

सुभाषचंद्र बोस यांचे शिक्षण कटकमधील रॅवेंशॉ कॉलिजिएट हायस्कूलमध्ये झाले. त्यांना वेणीमाधव नावाच्या शिक्षकाचे मार्गदर्शन लाभले आणि त्यांनीच बोस यांची सुप्त देशभक्ती जागृत केली. वयाच्या पंधराव्या वर्षी बोस गुरूच्या शोधात हिमालयात गेले. त्यांचा गुरूचा शोध असफल ठरल्याने त्यांनी स्वामी विवेकानंद यांचे साहित्य वाचले व त्यांचे शिष्य बनले. कोलकत्यातील प्रेसिडेंसी महाविद्यालयातओटेन नावाचे एक इंग्रज प्राध्यापक भारतीय विद्यार्थ्यांशी उर्मटपणे वागायचे. याविरुद्ध आवाज उठवण्यासाठी बोस यांनी महाविद्यालयात संप पुकारला होता. १९२१ साली इंग्लंडमध्ये जाऊन ते भारतीय नागरी सेवेच्या परीक्षेत उत्तीर्ण झाले परंतु इंग्रज सरकारची चाकरी करण्यास नकार देऊन त्यांनी राजीनामा दिला व ते मायदेशी परतले.

स्वातंत्र्यलढ्यात प्रवेश व कार्य:-

कोलकत्यातील ज्येष्ठ स्वातंत्र्यसैनिक, देशबंधू चित्तरंजन दास यांच्या कार्याने प्रभावित झाल्याने दासबाबूंबरोबर काम करण्याची बोस यांची इच्छा होती.बोस यांनी इंग्लंडहून पत्र लिहून त्यांच्याबर काम करण्याची इच्छा व्यक्त केली. रविंद्रठाकुर यांच्या सल्ल्यानुसार भारतात परतल्यानंतर ते प्रथम मुंबईला जाऊन महात्मा गांधींना भेटले.

कारावास:-

आपल्या सार्वजनिक जीवनात सुभाषबाबूंना एकूण अकरा वेळा कारावास भोगावा लागला. सर्वप्रथम १९२१ साली त्यांना सहा महिन्यांचा कारावास भोगावा लागला. ५ नोव्हेंबर १९२५ च्या दिवशी, देशबंधू चित्तरंजन दासांचे कोलकाता येथे देहावसान झाले. सुभाषबाबूंनी त्यांच्या मृत्यूची बातमी मंडालेच्या कारागृहात रेडियोवर ऐकली.
मंडाले कारागृहातील असताना सुभाषबाबूंची तब्येत बिघडली. त्यांना क्षयरोगाने ग्रासले. परंतु इंग्रज सरकारने तरीही त्यांची सुटका करण्यास नकार दिला. सरकारने त्यांची सुटका करण्यासाठी अट घातली की त्यांनी औषधोपारासाठी युरोपला जावे. पण औषधोपचारानंतर ते भारतात कधी परत येऊ शकतात हे सरकारने स्पष्ट केले नाही. त्यामुळे सुभाषबाबूंनी सरकारची अट मानली नाही.परंतु परिस्थिती अशी निर्माण झाली की सुभाषबाबूंचा मृत्यू कारागृहातच होईल असे वाटू लागले. या गोष्टीचा धोका इंग्रज सरकारला घ्यायचा नव्हता त्यामुळे सरकारने अखेर त्यांची सुटका केली. मग सुभाषबाबू औषधोपारासाठी डलहौसी येथे जाऊन राहिले.
१९३० साली सुभाषबाबू कारावासात असताना त्यांची कोलकात्त्याच्या महापौरपदी निवड झाली. त्यामुळे सरकारला त्यांची सुटका करणे भाग पडले.

फॉरवर्ड ब्लॉकची स्थापना:-

३मे१९३९ रोजी सुभाषबाबूंनी काँग्रेस अंतर्गत फॉरवर्ड ब्लॉक नावाच्या आपल्या पक्षाची स्थापना केली. काही दिवसांनंतर, सुभाषबाबूंना काँग्रेस मधून काढून टाकण्यात आले. पुढे फॉरवर्ड ब्लॉक हा एक स्वतंत्र पक्ष बनला.

मृत्यू:-

दुसर्‍या जागतिक महायुद्धातील जपानच्या पराभवानंतर, नेताजींना नवा रस्ता शोधणे जरूरी होते. त्यांनी रशियाकडून मदत मागायचे ठरवले होते.
ऑगस्ट १८, १९४५ रोजी नेताजी विमानातून मांचुरियाच्या दिशेने जात होते. ह्या प्रवासादरम्यान ते बेपत्ता झाले. ह्या दिवसानंतर ते कधी कुणाला दिसलेच नाहीत. २३ऑगस्ट १९४५ रोजी जपानच्या दोमेई वृत्त संस्थेने जगाला कळवले की, ऑगस्ट १८ रोजी नेताजींचे विमान तैवानच्या भूमीवर अपघातग्रस्त झाले होते व त्या दुर्घटनेत खूपच भाजलेल्या नेताजींचे हॉस्पिटलमध्ये निधन झाले. परंतु आजपर्यंत या मृत्यूचे कोडे सुटलेले नाही.
